Gold Medals to World's Finest in Gold Jewellry Design

June 2002/Newstream -- 34 designers were unveiled as winners at the Gold Virtuosi 2002 Awards, the 'Oscars' of the gold jewellery design world, at a spectacular gala event near Venice in Italy last night.

Sponsored by the world renowned Vicenza Jewellery Fair, the Gold Virtuosi Awards were created by the World Gold Council to inspire unrestricted creativity from gold designers, to honour excellence in craftsmanship and ultimately to expand the horizons of gold jewellery worldwide. Gold Virtuosi 2002 was the largest and most authoritative international gold competition ever held.

The 34 winners were chosen from a short-list of 100 finalists. The winning designs were selected on the basis of their originality, and technical and creative use of gold. The world's leading gold designers were among the record 1,700 entrants from 52 countries who, between them, submitted nearly 5,100 designs.

The spectacular winning suites of jewellery are being showcased at the Vicenza Jewellery Fair until 14th June and then are to be exhibited worldwide. They will offer a sneak preview of what is likely to appear on jewellers' shelves for years to come, as future design trends will almost certainly be hugely influenced by the outcome of the competition.

The biennial competition is open to jewellery designers, craftsmen, students and individuals involved in the design or manufacture of precious gold jewellery. The initial designs were submitted as drawings, and finalists actually created their designs in gold. The 100 finalists have each secured sponsors to provide the gold for their final submissions.

All entries were assessed by an elite panel of 14 judges including famous fashion photographers, jewellery designers and top journalists from around the world.
